![]() I loved that game for a long time but ultimately I came to the conclusion that I disliked more about it then I liked. ![]() I don't know how active the playerbase is right now, though, and the "Galactic Conquest" singleplayer mode is devoid of story it does have tech upgrades you can randomly acquire across the course of a campaign, which is actually quite fun. Shared armies is the best way to play the game, hands down. But it does have hover tanks (and hover battleships!) that can cross water and lava, "lieutenant" Commander super-workers, nanite swarms, gunships, space battleships, and a self-destruct device that can be built on a planet. The expansion is where the game really shines - though some backers were initially pissed that all the unit variety only came with the expansion, and it still didn't introduce factions with different units. One lament is that the game's promised damage to planets was scrapped mid-development due to insurmountable bugs, and now all planet destruction methods result in mere deletion. Superweapons include thrusters on planets, interplanetary unit cannons, teleporters, orbital attack satellites and nuclear missiles, to say nothing of a Death Star victory. The core game's unit roster is straightforward - tanks are chunky, aggressive land units, Bots are amphibious and fast but far weaker, and air and naval units are very strong and perform as you'd expect - with the one caveat that they can't leave the planet. Handling the Orbital sphere is a bit tricky, though. Unlike Starcraft, almost all units can shoot while moving, so your micromanagement won't be 1000APM wrist-breaking nonsense. Though the UI/controls are a little awkward at first, once you get the hang of them it's very smooth for controlling massive armies across multiple planets rallying factories to teleporters and teleporters to the attack front is quite easy, as is attack-moving and strafing. There are some flaws with the game, but it's definitely an experience.
